ChatGPT Shopping: How to Show Up When AI Becomes the Shop Window

ChatGPT Shopping: How to Show Up When AI Becomes the Shop Window

ChatGPT now has a pinned Shopping tab. How ecommerce brands get surfaced in AI shopping: product feeds, visual search readiness, reviews and measurement.

Table of content:

This week OpenAI pinned a Shopping tab to the ChatGPT sidebar, complete with a landing page, a dedicated shopping search page and visual search, initially without in-app checkout in some regions. It is a small interface change with a large implication: shopping inside an assistant is no longer something users discover by accident mid-conversation, it is a destination with a permanent front door. This guide covers what ChatGPT Shopping is, how products get surfaced there, and what an ecommerce brand should do about it now rather than in a year.

ChatGPT Shopping is a dedicated shopping experience inside ChatGPT: a pinned sidebar entry leading to a shopping landing page and a shopping-focused search experience, including visual search. Instead of a ranked list of ten blue links, it answers product questions conversationally, drawing on merchant product data and public information to recommend, compare and describe options.

Why Does a Pinned Tab Change Anything?

Because permanence changes behaviour. A feature buried in a conversation gets used by enthusiasts; a pinned tab in the sidebar becomes a habit for everyone, and habits are what turn a surface into a channel. We have watched this pattern before: search tabs, marketplace apps, social shopping tabs, each moved from novelty to default in roughly the same way. Combine it with the data point we covered recently, that ChatGPT already draws more paid clicks from Google than any other top destination, and the direction is clear enough to act on, which is why we wrote our guide to advertising in AI assistants alongside this one.

How Does Product Discovery Work in an Assistant?

Differently enough to matter. Three mechanics govern it. Structured product data: assistants prefer clean, machine-readable facts about products, price, availability, attributes, images, which is why your feed and on-site structured data increasingly decide whether you can be recommended at all. Synthesis rather than ranking: the assistant reads multiple sources and produces one answer, so it is choosing what to say about your product, not simply where to place your link. And conversational constraints: users bring budgets, use cases and requirements into the question, meaning the winning product is the one whose data most obviously satisfies a stated constraint rather than the one with the strongest domain authority.

Visual search adds a fourth: users photographing or uploading an image and asking for similar products, which rewards brands whose imagery is high resolution, consistent and unobstructed by promotional overlays, exactly the standard Google is also moving towards with its Merchant Center image requirements.

What Makes a Brand Legible to AI Shopping?

Four assets, in rough order of impact. The product feed comes first: complete, accurate, current, with descriptive titles that name the product the way a human would ask for it, full attributes, honest availability and images that survive scrutiny. Second, on-site structured data: product schema, prices, stock status and reviews marked up so a crawler does not have to guess. Third, third party proof: assistants weigh independent signals heavily when recommending, so review volume and ratings, plus mentions in credible round-ups and comparisons, shape whether you appear in a shortlist. Fourth, citable content: pages that answer real buying questions with clear definitions and attributed claims, the GEO principles we set out in our ChatGPT SEO guide.

Notice what is missing from that list: clever copy and brand tone. They still matter enormously to humans reading your site, and almost not at all to whether an assistant can consider your product. Both jobs need doing, and most brands are currently doing only the first.

What Should Brands Do This Quarter?

Start with a reality check, because it takes fifteen minutes. Open ChatGPT, run five realistic category prompts a customer might use, including a constrained one such as a budget and a use case, and see which brands appear and how they are described. If you are absent, note who is present and where the assistant seems to be pulling their information from. That single exercise usually reveals more than a month of speculation, and it gives you a baseline to repeat quarterly.

Then fix in order: feed completeness and image quality, on-site product schema, review generation, and finally content that answers comparison questions in your category. Nothing on that list is exotic and most of it improves your Google Shopping performance too, which is the reassuring part: preparing for AI shopping is mostly doing the feed and content basics properly, the same foundations behind our Google Shopping guide.

How Do You Measure Any of This?

Imperfectly, and deliberately. Assistant referrers under-report, so build a triangulated picture: referral traffic where it is visible, direct and branded search lift, a how did you hear about us prompt at checkout, and your own quarterly prompt testing as a visibility proxy. Watch for the pattern rather than the number: rising direct traffic and branded searches with no corresponding campaign activity is often assistant-driven discovery showing up in the only place it can, the measurement discipline from our analytics guide.

What About Checkout?

This is the part to watch. Shopping surfaces without in-app checkout send buyers to your site, which means your own conversion rate still decides the outcome and the work in our checkout optimization guide applies unchanged. As assistant checkout expands, through integrations such as Shopify's AI checkout with ChatGPT, more of the transaction moves inside the conversation, which trades control for convenience: you gain frictionless purchase and lose some ownership of the customer relationship. Both models will coexist for a while, so the sensible posture is to be present in the surface, excellent on your own site, and deliberate about which assistant checkout programmes you join.

The Honest Summary

ChatGPT Shopping is early, uneven and regionally patchy, and it is also the clearest signal yet that product discovery is moving into assistants. Brands do not need a strategy for it so much as a standard: a feed good enough to be quoted, images good enough to be shown, reviews good enough to be trusted, and content clear enough to be cited. Reach that standard and you are prepared for every version of this channel that arrives next, including the paid one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ChatGPT Shopping?

ChatGPT Shopping is a dedicated shopping experience inside ChatGPT, now pinned to the sidebar, with a landing page and a shopping-focused search page. It surfaces products conversationally and through visual search, drawing on merchant product data and public information.

Why does ChatGPT Shopping matter for ecommerce brands?

Because it turns an assistant into a shop window with its own front door. A pinned tab means shopping is a destination rather than an accident, and the brands whose product data and reviews are legible to the assistant get recommended.

How do you get your products to appear?

Make your product data and content machine-readable: a complete, accurate feed with strong titles, attributes, pricing, availability and high resolution images, structured product data on your site, and credible third party reviews.

Is ChatGPT Shopping the same as advertising in ChatGPT?

No. Shopping surfaces are organic product discovery driven by data and content, while ChatGPT advertising is paid placement inside answers. They share the same underlying assets.

How do you measure traffic from AI shopping surfaces?

Track assistant referrers, watch direct and branded search lift, add a how did you hear about us question at checkout, and test realistic category prompts yourself. Expect under-reporting and triangulate.
